The central tableau captures the sun and its family of planets in their orbital paths as seen from a vantage point outside the solar system. Detail depicted includes the asteroid belt, and the relative intensity of sunlight, which diminishes dramatically in the outer reaches of the solar system.</>
Pluto's orbit, being the most eccentric, actually passing within the orbit of neptune during part of its revolution, is shownin contrasting color.
Spread across the bottom of the chart are individual portraits of the sun and each of the planets. Accompanying each portrait is a table of vital statistics (reflecting Voyager data) including: number of known satellites, diameter, average distance from the sun, period of revolution, and rotational period.
